Legionella bacteria settle in the lungs of patients and reproduce, causing Legionnaires’ disease, which results in death in 15–20% of cases. The natural habitat of Legionella species includes rivers, lakes, thermal waters, and spring waters. Although found in low numbers in nature, these bacteria rapidly multiply when they encounter suitable environments and conditions in building water systems.
